Pakistani Blowback
Let's take a stroll through time back to late November of 2001.
Our country had 2 months earlier, on 9-11, suffered one of the worst attacks in modern history.
Several countries had dedicated airspace to our cause...and the Bush Administration was beginning to build a strong alliance with PAKISTAN?
PAKISTAN...the place from whence the Taliban had come.
PAKISTAN...the country who had sold nuclear weapons secrets to North Korea.
PAKISTAN...a country headed by a Military General who seized power in a coup, and who had overthrown a previously democratically elected government?
We sent them billions in aid for their help, despite previous convictions that they were in fact complicit in the Talibans rise to power.
In the spring of 2001 our own state department had this to say about Pakistan. (and i Quote)
"The United States remains concerned about reports of continued
Pakistani support for the Taliban's military operations in Afghanistan.
Credible reporting indicates that Pakistan is providing the Taliban
with materiel, fuel, funding, technical assistance, and military
advisers. Pakistan has not prevented large numbers of Pakistani
nationals from moving into Afghanistan to fight for the Taliban.
Islamabad also failed to take effective steps to curb the activities of
certain madrassas, or religious schools, that serve as recruiting
grounds for terrorism."
Not only this...but President Carter, then Reagan, then Bush used Pakistan as the jumping off point for the Mujhadeen in the U.S. backed plan to smear Ruusia with defeat, and the Mujhadeen were from whence Osama, and the Taliban had come.
In November, then December of 2001 I was immediately, and inexoricably concerned about this piece of news. To me it was like allying with Mussolini to get to Japan.
What's worse is that once it became clear that Pakistan was the place the bad guys were heading...we gave them more aid...and deepened our alliance with a thug.
Mark my words...George Bush's decision to forsake the interests of the American People (by not capturing Osama Bin Laden) and keeping an alliance with Pakistan rather than pressuring them to give him up...
...is about to turn the world into a literal cauldron of fire.
